Axel Sjoberg Pens New Deal
Axel Sjoberg has become the latest St Patrick's Athletic player to sign a new contract, as he gets set for his third season as a Saint.
Axel arrived in Inchicore on March 3rd 2023 and made his debut off the bench on March 31st in a 3-0 win at home to UCD.
The Swede made 26 appearances last season (2024), including in all six of our UEFA Conference League matches as St Pat's made it to the cusp of the group stages.
In total, the 24-year-old has played 33 times for the club.
Sjoberg said: "It's great news, I've signed a new deal with St Pat's and I'm really looking forward to the new season as we hope to continue on from how we finished last season.
We have built a great team and a strong environment for all the players and the connection with the fans too.
We had a good European campaign in 2024 and I hope we will next year as well, we want to keep going and have a great year together with everyone.
Stephen Kenny came in and made big changes, and he brought in a few players that made us stronger as a group.
I want to thank all the Pat's fans for the support last season you were amazing and I can't wait to see you at Richmond Park next year, Yup The Saints!"
The Swede spent seven years in the Helsingborgs Academy, before joining 2nd Division side IK Freg, making 26 appearances.
The right-back signed for Hammarby IF in August 2020 and won the Swedish FA Cup during the 2020-2021 campaign, it was a 5-4 penalty shootout win after a 0-0 draw against BK Hacken.
He spent the 2022 season with BK Olympic, making 25 appearances before joining The Saints in March of 2023.
Axel's twin brother Filip is also a professional footballer, he plays for IK Brage in the Swedish 2nd Division.
Having confirmed new contracts for Danny Rogers, Jamie Lennon and Anto Breslin over recent weeks, and capturing the signing of winger Simon Power from Sligo Rovers, Manager Stephen Kenny is delighted with today's news regarding Axel Sjoberg:
"Axel showed great character to come back from a long term injury and had an excellent second-half of last season.
His form was very consistent, his one v one defending is really really exceptional.
Axel is a vibrant player and person in the dressing room and around the club.
It's not always easy to move to a new country and adapt to a new league, and he's done very well since coming in from Sweden two years ago.
We're delighted that he's chosen to stay in Ireland with St Patrick's Athletic and we look forward to having him for the season ahead."
