DUBLIN DERBY WIN FOR SAINTS

BRICKFIELDS WITNESSED an enthralling Dublin Derby that would have been fitting for the Eircom League stage. Pats 11s had the Hoops 11s on the back foot for the opening 20 minutes and in that time crucially scored 2 goals.

The 1st came from good work down the right with Will O'Brien finding Gregory Moorhouse, whose initial shot was well saved however the Rovers keeper couldn't prevent Patrick Carey scoring.

The Saints' 2nd was a quick counter-attack. Rovers had won a corner which was headed clear by the excellent Alex Dolan into the path of Will O'Brien. O'Brien found Moorhouse in a 1 on 1 situation with the last defender on the half way line. The forward still had plenty of work to do, Moorhouse powered past his marker and then kept his cool to beat the keeper.

After that Rovers came more into the game and were rewarded in the 26 minute with a goal of their own. 3 minutes later Carey restored the Saints 2 goal advantage with another well taken goal. It looked as if at the break Pats would be going in at 3-1 but Rovers fashioned a 2nd in the 2nd minute of 1st half added time.

Pats number 9 Moorhouse started the 2nd half with an exquisite lob after 9 minutes, latching onto Will O'Brien's cross to put Pats 4-2 up. However in the 44th minute Rovers scored a blistering free-kick, one David Beckham would have been proud of, such was its quality. Glen Curtis the Pats keeper had no chance as the ball flew into his left hand top corner.

Now at 4-3 the game was set up for an enthralling last 15 minutes. Rovers tried hard but could find no way past the resilience of Byrne and O'Mahoney in the centre of the Pats midfield. When Rovers did break through keeper Curtis made a Pat Jennings type save with his feet to deny them.
