“I DID FANCY THE FREEKICK”, Keith Fahey
In a thrilling encounter in Richmond Park on Sunday, Pats earned a last gasp victory over Cork City. With Pats' leading 2-0 as the game entered it last stages - enter Cork's John O'Flynn. The flying O'Flynn twice headed home to unbelievably bring the Leesiders level.
Saints midfielder, Keith Fahey spoke after the game, “We gave away two soft goals and I thought we had blown it. I wasn't even sure if we were going to hold onto the draw Cork had the upper hand. But we showed character to get the winner.”
In the 86th minute super sub O'Flynn's 2nd goal of the game cancelled out Gary O'Neill's 2nd minute opener and following Gary Dempsey's sublime pass, Keith Fahey's 64th minute goal. In a dizzying eight minute spell the Cork man had stunned Richmond Park.
When Cork equalized it looked as if Pats had blown their opportunity to cash in on extending their lead at the top and take advantage of their rivals who had faltered at the weekend.
That all changed when Alan Kirby made a great driving run at the Cork defence before Colin Healy's late tackle had the Richmond faithful screaming for a penalty, referee Hancock called it correctly giving a freekick on the edge of the Cork box.
Up stepped Pat's freekick specialist, Fahey.
“I did fancy the freekick – Gary Dempsey wanted me to roll it to him but I wasn't going to do that!” smiled Fahey.
“I think their keeper left himself with a lot of ground to make up. I'm not sure if he was expecting me to hit it.”
In the 88th minute “Fats” stunning right foot shot left Cork keeper, Devine vainly attempting to claw the ball back out of the net.
Pats held onto to the 3-2 win and are now six points ahead of their closest challenger's Bohemians.
