St Patrick’s Athletic manager John McDonnell was delighted with the performance that his team registered in the 0-0 draw with Hertha Berlin on Tuesday afternoon.
With a place in the group stages of the Uefa Cup on offer, the pressure was on the Dublin club to turn around a two-goal defict from the first leg.
Even though they had the better of the chances in the match, it wasn’t to be for The Super Saints as their European adventure came to an end.
“How did we not win the game? [Andrei] Voronin got in with a chance and put it wide, but after that we hit the post twice and had chances including one right at the end,” said McDonnell after the match.
“I thought we played fantastic football. I spoke [before the game] about brigding the gap and I think we are bridging the gap.
“We definitely had chances to go win the match and could have won it by two or three.
“The plan went the way we wanted it to go. The players were fantastic, from one to 11.”
The Saints boss was quick to direct praise towards the crowd that turned out at the RDS and cheered the team on as they tried to topple their German Bundesliga opponents.
“The crowd were brilliant. They got right behind us from the start,” enthused McDonnell.
“I don’t think anyone was let down [by the result]. There was a big team from Germany coming to Dublin and it was there for entertainment, it was a big event and we didn’t let anyone down.”
